Nichols Middle School chess team placed fifth at the Illinois State Chess tournament on March 8-10 in Normal, Ill. Two of the team’s 11 players scored in the top 50, six in the top 100 and the remainder in the top 150. Sixth-grader Liam O’Carroll led the group in scoring, and placed 15th in the state. Eighth-grader Sam Bergman placed 28th, also earning him a trophy for Best in Grade.

Oliver Brady, Jonathan Wilburn, Adrian Wilburn, Joe Weissler and Simon Lequar

all contributed three wins each, and Thomas Stephens, Tom Sevcik, Roy Midyan and Sean Linehan each had two wins. Also joining the team to compete at state were non-Nichols players who practice with Nichols, including Riley Wilson from Haven and Evan Franchere from Chiaravalle Montessori. Nichols Lions Chess is coached by Grandmaster Florian Felecan and managed by team parents James Lequar and Leslie Sevcik.
