At approximately 2:30 p.m. today, April 16, a vehicle struck the CVS Pharmacy building in the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue in downtown Evanston. An investigation by Evanston police showed that a 74-year old female driver from Evanston had pushed the accelerator when trying to pull into a parking space causing her vehicle, a 2013 Subaru Forrester, to go over the curb and strike a parking meter, a bicycle locked to the meter and the CVS Pharmacy building, said Commander Jay Parrott of the Evanston Police Department.
No one was injured as a result of the accident.
The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for damaging City property, said Comdr. Parrott. The police accident investigator will recommend the driver be re-tested by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office for driving privileges, he said.
The building structure suffered minor damage, but was being inspected by the City of Evanston property standards department for safety, said the Commander. Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene.
