Evanston was ranked as one of the top ten cities with the greenest commuting habits in a recent study. NerdWallet, a financial literacy website, analyzed 439 U.S. cities whose residents display environmentally conscious everyday behaviors. Evanston ranked number 10 overall due to the community’s commitment to the environment and sustainable practices. Evanston ranked higher than such notable cities as Philadelphia (12th place), Chicago (14th place) and Seattle (15th place).
“Many communities’ transit systems are convenient to travel to and from locations outside the community. But in Evanston, you can use these systems to travel within the community and make travel greener; even going to shops, restaurants, the lakefront and other leisure destinations,” said Catherine Hurley, the City of Evanston’s Sustainable Programs Coordinator.
