Evanston Police responded this morning, May 16, at approximately 7:15 a.m. to a construction site accident on the southeast end of the Northwestern University campus. A 57-year old male from Indiana, who was working on the site, was struck by a falling beam that had been knocked off a sixth floor by a crane, said Commander Jay Parrott of the Evanston Police Department. The beam struck the construction worker in the head and chest causing severe injuries, said the Commander.
The worker was transported by Evanston Fire Paramedics to North Shore University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner and OSHA were notified of the death. No further construction is scheduled to be performed on the site for the rest of the day, and OSHA had responded to the construction site this morning. The deceased’s name is not being released at this time pending family notification. Northwestern University Police assisted in the investigation.
