The Kiwanis Club of Evanston honored two Evanston Township High School staff members with the Hixson Award for their outstanding service to the community in which they live or work. Mary Collins, ETHS Community Service Coordinator, and David Chan, ETHS Technology Information Specialist, received recognition for their special efforts

Ms. Collins has worked with the Kiwanis Club on the Earth Day celebration, as well as several other projects that have given the students an opportunity to work with adults in the community as mentors and role models. Mr. Chan worked on the design of the Kiwanis Funville project which has encouraged students to find new ways to improve living in Evanston with an emphasis on fun. He also helped with the Faces of Evanston project.

The award is named in honor of the first Kiwanis International president, George F. Hixson. The club contributes $1,000 to Kiwanis International for each Hixson award. The funds are directed to the worldwide Eliminate Project which is working to eliminate neo-natal tetanus in infants.

Ms. Collins and Mr. Chan join Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro, former mayors Lorraine Morton and Jay Lytle, and community leaders as Hixson winners.
