Contractors for the City of Evanston will begin work on the Davis St. improvement project starting July 29 for about 13 weeks from Ridge Ave. to Hinman Ave. This project will follow behind the work that is currently being done on Davis St. by Nicor, updating their infrastructure, and by the city, replacing 90- to 100-year-old water and sewer lines. Aside
from the street resurfacing, a new protected bicycle lane will be installed along with new sidewalks, brick borders and tree grates.
The scope of work includes streetscape and street resurfacing improvements on Davis St. The streetscape work will include replacing the existing pavers with a new concrete sidewalk and a brick border, installing new roadway curbing as needed and replacing the existing tree grates and frames. The street resurfacing involves grinding the asphalt surface, replacing roadway base and fiberglass crack control and paving new asphalt surface from curb to curb, including replacing driveway aprons. A protected bike lane will be built on the north curb lane from Ridge Ave. to Hinman Ave. There will be no changes to the existing streetscape and bike lane on Davis Street between Benson and Sherman on the north side.
The roadwork is part of the city’s continuous program to improve the roadway system throughout the community. This project is funded by the Washington National TIF Funds and Capital Improvement Funds.
The project expected to be substantially completed by the third week of October 2013. During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained on Davis Street during the entire duration of the project. The actual date when construction is planned will be noted on the temporary “NO PARKING” signs posted 48 hours prior to the start of the work.
The construction activities will create some inconveniences for the abutting businesses and residents, but workers will attempt to minimize these issues. The street sweeping and/or neighborhood parking restrictions will be waived for a one-block radius around the construction zone. Allowances have been made to maintain pedestrian access to businesses on Davis St. for the duration of construction. The City of Evanston asks that businesses/residents use legal street parking spaces on adjacent side streets and parking garages for their parking needs.
The contractor for this street improvement program is Chicagoland Paving Contractors, Inc., 225 Telser Road, Lake Zurich, IL 60047.
The project is under the supervision of the city’s Engineering & Infrastructure Division. The Resident Engineer in the field will be Dan Abraham, who will be directly responsible for all aspects of the construction. Questions or concerns about the project can be directed to the Resident Engineer by calling 3-1-1 or 847/448- 4311. Questions about the street resurfacing projects in general should be directed to Sat Nagar, P.E., Senior Project Manager, by calling 3-1-1.
