Police found two deceased males in the basement of Evanston Pipe & Tobacco, 923 Davis Street, at about 8:20 p.m. on July 30. The men,  Azim Hakeem, 38, and Mobeen Hakeem, 34, were brothers and residents of Evanston.  They appeared to have died as a result of gunshot wounds, said Commander Jay Parrott of the Evanston Police Department.

The pipe and tobacco shop was a family business, which had operated at that location for more than 30 years.

Their mother became concerned when she could not reach her sons and after going to the pipe and tobacco shop found it padlocked. She called police, who conducted a premises check.

“There was no indications that a robbery had taken place at the scene and this incident is being classified as a death investigation at this time,” said Commander Parrott. The deceased brothers were transported to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office for post mortem examinations, he added.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force is aiding Evanston police in the investigation.
