The Evanston Art Center, 2603 Sheridan Road, celebrated Evanston’s sesquicentennial on July 27 with an assemblage of 150 4-foot-tall, 8-inch-diameter cardboard candles on the lawn.

The construction tubes were donated by Home Depot, saving the Art Center about $1000, and decorated by Art Center interns and by the area businesses and individuals who paid $150 each to sponsor one. About 60 were sponsored, said Art Center Director of Development and Communications, raising about $7500 for exhibition programming. City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz purchased one; the candle sponsored by The Evanston RoundTable was voted the People’s Choice (see photo p. 1, aRound Town). RoundTable photo
