For the third year, thousands of runners will line Evanston’s lakefront on Thanksgiving morning for the Evanston Flying Turkey 5K. The race, which begins and ends in beautiful Centennial Park, will also serve as the 2013 USATF Illinois 5K Road Championship.

The run begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 28 at Centennial Park in Evanston with a course that gives participants the opportunity to tour the campus of Northwestern University while also taking in the sights along Lake Michigan. All runners will receive a heavyweight long sleeve t-shirt and a goodie bag to reward them for their efforts.

USATF members looking to earn some hardware have the opportunity to compete against their peers at the race. The top three USATF member finishers in 26 men’s and women’s five-year age groups will receive gold, silver and bronze state championship medals during the race, which is one of the last events in the 2013 Road Race Championship Series.

Registration is only $30 through Nov. 6, but will increase to $35 between Nov. 7 and Nov. 27 and to $40 on race day. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Foundation 65 and Evanston Swims. In addition, participants are encouraged to bring canned goods to the race to benefit the Harvest Food Pantry.
