Fishing columnist Dick Peach and education reporter Larry Gavin received first-place awards in the non-daily category at the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association awards dinner last month.

Mr. Peach was recognized for his “Hooked on Fishing” column about fishing in Lake Michigan and smaller local lakes. Mr. Gavin earned the “best news story series” award for his news series on teacher appraisal, a local and nationwide issue.

Les Jacobson won second place in the “sports story” category for his profile of Northwestern University lacrosse coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. Victoria Scott received second place in the “business/financial/consumer “category for her story on The Alcove, a small pub on Main Street. 

Charles Wilkinson received a second-place award for headline writing.

Mr. Gavin received a second-place award in the “best technical/medical” category for his update on the status of the proposed wind farm in Lake Michigan. He also received a third-place award for the informational graphic category for the charts that accompanied his story on academic achievement at School District 65.
