Teens have a lot of questions, and not all are about homework. There is often no easy way for teenagers to get helpful answers when they feel pressured to have sex, if they are unsure about dating, or if they have a question about the body that is too embarrassing to mention.
“Teen Loveline,” a collaboration between the Evanston Public Library and the City’s Health Department, will answer those and other questions between 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Teen Loft in the main Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. Modeled after the highly popular Loveline radio show, the program will provide high school students with a safe, private and fun environment in which they can have their dating, personal health and sexual health questions answered by experts.
The program panelists for “Teen Loveline” are Dr. Sharon Robinson and Dr. Nneka E. Onyezia from NorthShore University Health System, Maria de la Calle, public health nurse at Evanston Township High School Health Center, Devin Gosberry, health educator at Erie Family Health Center and Anneliese Moy, social worker at Evanston Township High School Health Center.
Renee Neumeier, Young Adult Services librarian, said “Teen Loveline” will provide “a judgment-free zone just for high school students where they can feel safe to ask the questions that might be too hard to run by their parents and too tricky for their friends to answer skillfully.”
Adds Jessyca Dudley, public health educator with the Evanston Health Department, “We expect that the tone will be conversational. For many students, this may be one of the few opportunities to have a trusted adult and professional answer questions or clarify myths about their sexual health and relationships.”
Students in grades 9-12 can register for the program at epl.org/teens or by calling 847-448-8625. Questions for the panelists can be submitted anonymously in three ways: by filling out the form at http://goo.gl/NGUgSv; by coming to the Loft and filling out a paper form; or by filling out a form at the event.
