Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz has announced that Deputy City Manager Joe McRae has been appointed Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services effective today. McRae will also continue to serve as Deputy City Manager in his new assignment. McRae became Interim Director in September, 2013.
“During his assignment as Interim Director, McRae led an overall evaluation of the department, working with the department’s management team to develop better ways to deliver services to Evanston’s residents. I was so impressed with his leadership these past few months, and the eagerness of the department staff to work with him, that I asked him to continue in this role on a permanent basis,” said Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. “McRae brings a fresh approach to the position that will help the City further its vision as being the most livable city in America. I thank him for also being willing to keep some of his citywide responsibilities while continuing as Deputy City Manager,” Bobkiewicz concluded.
McRae has served as Deputy City Manager since 2012. He began his service in Evanston as Assistant to the City Manager in 2008. McRae served in a similar capacity in Wilmette from 2007 to 2008 upon completing his term as an ICMA Local Government Management Fellow in Catawba County, North Carolina. McRae has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science/Public Communications from Ashland University in Ohio and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University.
