Voting is a vital right and responsibility. Several Evanston civic organizations are jointly sponsoring a forum on the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the impact of the June 2013 Supreme Court ruling on the Act, recent efforts to restrict voting rights, and the importance of expanding voter registration and election participation.
The forum will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan.11 in the Community room, Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave.
Speakers will be Ami Gandhi, executive director of the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute; Ruth Greenwood, Chicago Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; and George Mitchell, President, NAACP-Evanston. Evonda Thomas-Smith, of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority ENSA will moderate.
All are welcome.
Voter registration will be available at the Library from 1-2 and from 4-5 p.m. Sponsoring organizations are Delta Sigma Theta Sorority ENSA, League of Women Voters of Evanston, NAACP-Evanston, and the YWCA Evanston/Northshore.
