A team of ETHS students finished third in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge in February and will move on to the Sectional competition.

The Academic Challenge is a statewide competition in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics run through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Teams of up to 14 students take subject tests and have both individual and team placements.

“ETHS is in one of the toughest Regionals in the state, with schools like New Trier, Loyola Academy, both Niles North and West, Schaumburg, Conant, and Buffalo Grove, all having strong teams,” say ETHS teachers Mark Vondracek and Russell Kohnken who sponsor the team.

Individual medals went to Manny Dallas, 2nd in chemistry; Shai Markovich, 3rd in chemistry; Benedict Brady, 2nd in math; and Adam Frim, 1st in physics. Other members of the ETHS team are Andrew Bempah, Maddie Carr, Nick Easton, Micaela Homer, Justin Liao, Aaron Stone, Dan Thomas, Oliver Vickman and Liam Walsh.
