The Chessmen Club of the North Shore honored Mary Wilkerson, Taylor Avery and Carl’Drail Cannon at its annual fundraiser on March 22.
Ms. Wilkerson, who served on the boards of School District 202 and Family Focus, is co-founder of the African American Youth Achievement Awards program. She said that, rather than sitting and “saying, ‘Someone ought to do this,’ I realized that I was somebody who could do something. … I encourage young people to go to the table. You will be amazed at the power of one. You will be surprised at how many people will get on the bandwagon. … People just want to be invited.”
Keith Terry is president and Second Ward Alderman Peter Braithwaite, vice president, of the Chessmen Club, which for 56 years has had the mission of service to the youth and elderly of the community.
