Evanston’s American Legion Post 42 will host a Homemade Pasta Dinner from 5-8 p.m. on May 3 to raise travel expenses for disabled veterans competing this summer at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

For a $10 advance donation ($12 at-the-door) guests at Post 42’s meeting hall, located next to the CTA Purple Line at 1030 Central St., will enjoy pasta al dente with meatballs and sauce, plus salad, garlic bread, soft drinks and coffee. Kids under 6 eat free.

Proceeds help send a multi-sport team of wheelchair-bound area veterans, including many getting care at the North Chicago/Lovell VA Hospital, to the 34th annual Wheelchair Games to be held Aug. 12-17 in Philadelphia, Penn.

Co-sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Wheelchair Games include archery, basketball, bowling, field events, hand-cycling, a motorized wheelchair rally, nine-ball, power soccer, quad rugby, slalom, softball, swimming, table tennis, track, trapshooting and weightlifting.  Athletes compete against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience and age.

Anyone who cannot make it to the pasta dinner may send a contribution to American Legion Post 42, Box 42, Evanston, IL 60204. More information is available by calling the Post at 847-475-9076.
