On Tuesday, May 6 at 6 p.m., members of the Evanston community are invited to attend the Truck Driver Training and Certification Program Open House at the Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave., Evanston.
The City has partnered with Oakton Community College to provide an eight-week training and certification program to help community members prepare for the Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam. Tuition for the program costs $4,000 and includes training, driving instruction and the CDL exam fee. However, eligible individuals may qualify for tuition assistance up to 100 percent of the cost of the program through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Representatives will be available at the open house to begin the registration process.
As a part of the program’s requirements, all candidates must be 18 years or older and attend the open house. High school diplomas or equivalent are preferred, but not required. In addition, candidates must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and must pass an Illinois Department of Transportation physical exam and drug text. It is recommended that students obtain a copy of their Motor Vehicle Report from the Secretary of State’s Office prior to starting the program.
Courses are scheduled to be held Monday, July 7, 2014 through August 26, 2014, with a week of final exam preparation. Students will also receive job placement assistance, resume writing and interview skills training, and a chance to network with recruiters from the trucking industry during the program.
