The “green” in the sustainability effort by Amigos de las Americas took place not on the green of a park or parkway but on the bare asphalt of Evanston Plaza, where six students unloaded used electronics for recycling. Evanston Township High School students Logan Sutherland, Grace Haab and Andrew O’Brien, and fellow Amigos Daniel Colombo, Bella Tanaka and Christine Sayre are all bound for Latin America or South America this summer. They will stay with host families and work on service projects, said Meena Klein, president of the Chicago/North Shore chapter of Amigos. Seventeen volunteers from this chapter will spend between six and eight weeks working with community leaders, assessing needs and working on the projects, she said. Grace, Daniel and Logan will be going to Paraguay, Bella to Costa Rica and Andrew to Nicaragua for the summer. This is the 50th year for Amigos de las Americas.
