Evanston senior Parker English posted the two fastest qualifying times in two events Friday in preliminary competition at the Illinois High School Association track and field Class 3A state finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
English set the qualifying pace in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.80 seconds, then came back to record the best time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.74. She also advanced to the finals in the 100, where her time of 11.96 ranks 3rd among the competition.
Sophomore Gabriell Watson cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to advance to the finals in the high jump and there was a bittersweet finish for the Wildkits in the 110-meter hurdles race. Running side-by-side in Heat No. 3, ETHS junior Alexia Harvey edged out senior teammate Remy Amarteifio for the last qualifying spot by a margin of 14.92 to 14.94.
Evanston’s relay entries fell short in their qualifying bids. Evanston’s 400-meter relay team was disqualified, and the foursome of Miranda Dangerfield, Amarteifio, Harvey and Grace Sarkor missed out in the 800 relay by 3-10ths of a second with a time of 1:42.57.
That quartet was clocked in 3:58.17 in the 1600 relay but did not advance.
Also competing as individuals for ETHS but failing to advance were English in the long jump with a best effort of 16 feet, 10 inches; Shahara Mitchell, 39-1.25 in the shot put; and Latalee Lawrence, 33-9 in the triple jump.
