On June 2, 2014 at approximately 12:25 p.m. police responded to an auto theft that occurred in the alley of the 600 block of Sheridan Road, said Commander Jay Parrott of the Evanston Police Department. Police learned that the female victim, age 69, from Chicago was parked in the alley with the keys in the ignition when a young man opened the victim’s car door and threatened the victim. The young man implied he had a weapon and then pulled the victim from the auto and drove off in the victim’s vehicle, said the Commander.

The victim’s auto was located a short time later in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood and then driven back into Evanston.  The offender fled on foot after striking two cars and was subsequently taken into custody by police in the 400 block of Keeney Street hiding under a rear stairwell, said Commander Parrott.  No injuries were reported during the incident.

The victim was able to identify the offender and detectives charged an Evanston man, age 19, with Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking and other offenses, said the Commander. The young man was on parole with the Illinois Department of Corrections at the time of his arrest, he added.
