Evanston Police while curbing a vehicle for a traffic violation on June 15, 2014 at approximately 1:25 a.m. near the intersection of Ashland Avenue and Dobson Street observed a young man in the vehicle with a handgun, said Commander Jay Parrott of the Evanston Police Department. When police attempted to take custody of the young man, he fled on foot. The young man was taken into custody a short time later near the fence line along the CTA tracks in the 1400 block of Brummel Street after fighting with officers, said the Commander. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered during the incident, and the two arresting officers suffered minor bruising and abrasions as a result of the arrest, said the Commander.

The young man, 21, resides in Evanston. He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, aggravated battery of a police officer and related charges, said the Commander. The young man was on parole at the time of his arrest, and the Illinois Department of Corrections issued a parole violation warrant as a result of this incident, said the Commander.

Commander Parrott added, “The Evanston Police Department strictly enforces individuals illegally possessing firearms as a part of a violence reduction strategy.”
