Today, June 18, at approximately 11:37 a.m., Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services fire companies were dispatched to 621 Sheridan Rd. to investigate a report of an explosion in the building’s courtyard.

Arriving companies found that a three-story brick residential building with nine units had been struck by lightning. The electrical power feed to the building was knocked out along with a portion of the building’s chimney, which collapsed on two separate attached porch sections of the building.

The residents will be displaced while City Building Division personnel, a structural engineer, fire officials, along with the building’s management evaluate the building’s structural integrity and electrical system.

There was no fire related to the lightning strike and no injuries were sustained. The Red Cross is assisting with the displaced families.
