At the June 2 District 65 School Board meeting, SAGE (Schools are Gardening in Evanston) steering committee members Stephanie Fine, Kitty Okano, Lynn Hyndman and Jennifer Moran presented SAGE Garden Volunteer awards to Loren Span-Bondi, JayLene McLandish, and Lori Walsh, who have been leaders in developing school gardens at Kingsley, Oakton and Pope John XXIII, respectively.

SAGE is a community movement to support edible gardens in the elementary schools and provides an introduction to growing, harvesting and tasting fresh, locally grown produce. SAGE works collaboratively with schools, teachers, students, parents and dedicated volunteers to ensure the program’s continued success as it expands into new schools. Today, 16 gardens exist throughout the Evanston school system.
