Today, June 30, 2014, at approximately 9 a.m., Evanston Police responded to a traffic crash involving a motorcycle and a bicyclist. The crash occurred in the 600 block of Church Street between Orrington Avenue and Chicago Avenue.
The motorcyclist was traveling east bound on Church Street when a bicyclist traveling east bound in the designated bike lane crossed Church Street mid-block into the path of the motorcycle, said Commander Perry Polinski of the Evanston Police Department. The bicyclist, a 55 year old female Evanston resident who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transported by Fire Department paramedics to Evanston Hospital with what were believed to be serious injuries, said the Commander. The operator of the motorcycle, a 27 year old male resident of Chicago, was not injured, he said.
The preliminary investigation conducted by the Evanston Police Department’s Traffic Bureau located a witness that observed the bicyclist cross Church St. and make contact with the motorcycle, said the Commander. Traffic officers were also assisted by investigators from the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT). No citations were issued to the motorcyclist as a result of this investigation. The 600 block of Church Street was closed for approximately three hours while the accident was being investigated.
Currently, the bicyclist is listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery for a head injury, said Commander Polinski.
