As it was cutting brush and weeds along the Union Pacific tracks (used by the METRA northline trains), a heavy piece of machinery spewed rocks and chunks of wood into a parking lot at University Place and East Railway Avenue in the afternoon on July 29.

That parking lot is the home to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings.

A RoundTable reporter observed one SUV parked about 40 yards from the tracks with a smashed rear window.

Another SUV parked about 75 yards from the tracks had a hole in a side window, with cracks emanating from the hole. The equipment operator apparently stopped the machine and left a note on one vehicle in the parking lot to contact a Union Pacific Senior Risk Management Officer to report damage to vehicles and to file a claim.
