Bob Danon, owner of Danon Art Gallery, 1814 Central St., will head to the island of Crete in a few weeks to kayak approximately 350 miles as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois Chapter.
He says he plans to kayak around at least three of Crete’s coasts hoping to raise awareness of and funds for the Greater Illinois Chapter. Several of his friends have had family members affected by Alzheimer’s, he says, and he is hoping to raise at least $50,000 for the chapter.
“I spent a lot of time with [the father of a friend] over the months that followed [his diagnosis], and I was able to observe the slight and then significant changes taking place in his mind and in his life,” Mr. Danon said.
“I will begin my paddle on the north coast, somewhere between the town of Hania, Gulf of Kissamos, (a bit further west) and paddling up and around the very northwest corner. … The goal is to paddle 300-350 miles,” he said.
