Defense delivered again Wednesday night and kept Evanston’s girls volleyball team alive in pursuit of the Central Suburban League South division championship.

Ruby Smith’s 8 blocks and strong back row defense from libero Clara Gruger helped the Wildkits rally to a three-set victory at Niles West and improve to 6-2 in conference play, two games behind league leader Glenbrook South. Evanston moved to 11-13 overall on the season.

After dropping the first set 25-17, the Wildkits prevailed by sweeping to victory in the last two sets by margins of 25-14 and 25-18 and defeated the Wolves for the second time this season.

Smith added 4 kills to back up ETHS offensive leader Ehize Omoghibo, who showed the way with 9 kills and 2 ace serves.
