The visible aspect of the second phase of The Merion began on Oct. 9 with a groundbreaking for the eight-story apartment complex on Chicago Avenue, complementing the existing structure at 1611 Chicago Ave. This addition will feature 63 furnished apartments, a two-story atrium lobby, an indoor pool, a rooftop terrace and semi-enclosed patio for Tapas Barcelona and 2,500 square feet of retail space.

The Merion is a senior living community that offers flexible short- and long-term rentals, social activities and an array of dining choices.

In 2012, Chicago-based Horizon Realty Group purchased the buildings, the former North Shore Retirement Hotel, 1611 Chicago Ave. Daniel Michael and his son Jeff, owners of Horizon Reality, named the new facility The Merion, after the ship that brought Daniel Michael’s father to this country.
