The Music Institute of Chicago welcomes families for a morning of music for families on Dec. 6. There will be an open house at 9 a.m., and the concert begins at 10 a.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave.

At the open house in the Nichols Concert Hall lobby, kids can enjoy playing a variety of instruments at the Music Institute Instrument Petting Zoo, parents can talk with faculty and staff and everyone can enjoy student performances.

At 10 a.m., with “Compose Yourself!,” Chicago composer James Stephenson will introduce kids to the instruments of the symphony orchestra and then lead the audience through the creation of a new work.

Those who attend are requested to bring new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items for the Mayor’s Holiday Food & Toy Drive. Tickets, at $5 per person, are available at or 800-838-3006.
