Michael Wynn, a icon at Evanston Township High School has died. A 1965 graduate of ETHS, Mr. Wynn was a four-year, three-sport athlete who excelled in football, basketball and track. He attended the University of Nebraska, where he played football four years as a defensive end, three years as a starter. He played professional football with the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots. In 1985, he returned to ETHS where he served as teacher, football and wrestling coach, coordinator for student services, Earn & Learn coordinator and Dean of Students until his retirement in 2003. In addition to his service as an educator, Mr.Wynn transformed the most tragic moment of his life, the accidental death of his 9-yr old son, Justin, in 1987 into a powerful service tothe community with the development of the Justin Wynn Fund.
Chis Livatino, athletic director at ETHS said, “I first met Coach Wynn as my freshman football coach. He needed no introduction nor would have wanted one. We knew how special he was from first contact. Coach Wynn … was a ‘man’s man,’ who had compassion and kindness and genuinely wanted to help make us better men with those same qualities. As a boy and even later as a man myself, just feeling that you had the approval and respect of a man like Coach Wynn was a special honor because you knew that he knew what mattered most in life whether he ever said it or not. While I am saddened to see him go, I am empowered to know that one man, one strong gentle giant of a man, can have such a big impact on our community and the world and am grateful that the hundreds and thousands of his Wynners will continue to carry on his legacy for generations to come. He will always be revered and loved and will never be forgotten.”
