Evanston Hosts Little League Baseball National Champions
Residents Invited to Attend Meet-and-Greet
On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles will host a meet-and-greet with players from the 2014 Little League National Championship baseball team, Chicago’s own Jackie Robinson West. Local little league players and residents are invited to meet the team at the restaurant, located at 2424 Dempster in Evanston.
“We thought it would be great to bring the team to Evanston and let the local kids meet the players who went all the way to the Little League World Series,” said Darnell Johnson, project manager for Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles. “We want to encourage Evanston kids to aim high and know that they, too, can make history.”
The team will arrive at the restaurant at 5:30 PM where they will have dinner and meet with residents. At 7:30 p.m., the players will travel to Northwestern University to watch the men’s basketball team take on the University of Illinois and be recognized at half time.
There is also a possibility that other celebrities will show up at the restaurant with local music industry legend George Daniels. Mr. Daniels, who is co-hosting the event, is the owner of George’s Music Room on Chicago’s south side.
Jackie Robinson West Little League was founded by Joseph H. Haley in the spring of 1971 on the south side of Chicago. Mr. Haley’s goal was to provide wholesome, healthy recreation through participation in the program while also teaching leadership skills and self discipline. The league currently has over 450 young people registered in the program, ranging in age from 4-16, according to Darold Butler who coached last year’s championship team. The team made it the World Series but was defeated by South Korea 8-4 in the title game.
“We are thrilled to host these young men in Evanston,” said Alderman Peter Braithwaite. “Their hard work and dedication is an inspiration to us all. I am also grateful to the businesses that contributed to this event. Thanks so much to Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles, host/sponsor; George Daniel, co-host; and Davis Transportation and Northwestern University who contributed as well.”
