The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) held its debate championship events March 20-21 in Springfield, with students from ETHS taking state titles in two of the four divisions. Seniors Graham Straus and Kevin Klyman earned the top spot in Public Forum debate and senior Joey Schnide was state champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Klyman and Straus earned ETHS’s first ever championship in Public Forum, finishing atop a field of 38 schools. Schnide successfully defended his state title in Lincoln-Douglas debate, besting entries from 32 schools.
“This is only the fourth time in IHSA history a school has won multiple state debate titles in the same year,” remarked ETHS Debate coach Jeff Hannan. “These are ETHS’s eighth and ninth state championships in debate.”
In addition, Schnide, who won the final Lincoln-Douglas round on a 5-0 decision, was named the captain of the all-state Lincoln-Douglas debate team (the top speaker at the tournament). “Combined with his title from last year, Schnide just submitted perhaps the most dominant two-year performance at the state tournament in the last decade,” Mr. Hannan said.
