Three members of the Evanston High School debate team were honored recently by the Kiwanis Club of Evanston for their outstanding records as debaters and as students: Joey Schnide, Kevin Klyman and Graham Straus.

Joey, the reigning state champion in the Lincoln-Douglas debate format, credited debate with building his confidence and also forcing him to learn both sides of a story. Debate team Kevin and Graham are among the best in the country, said Jeff Hannan, adviser to the debate team. Kevin said he has learned to respect other people’s opinions and has developed his writing skills through debate.

Graham, who will attend Brown University next fall, said he hopes to stay involved in debate, perhaps judging when the team competes next year at Harvard.

The students received the TedVanZelst award, named for the late president and founder of Soil-Test, a former Evanston corporation.

In late April the team will attend debate competitions in Kentucky and Dallas including the University of Kentucky Tournament of Champions.
