ETHS senior Harry Thornton placed as one of 10 finalists at the 32nd annual English-Speaking Union (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition. After winning a regional competition in February, Henry competed nationally on April 27 at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City.
In three progressive competition levels, students memorize, interpret, and perform monologues and sonnets in their own schools, at ESU Branch-sponsored community competitions and at the National Shakespeare Competition.
Anne Lefkowitz, an ETHS play director and sponsor of the ETHS Shakespeare Club was his coach. With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Henry competed against 56 other winners of ESU Branch competitions and participated in two days of educational and cultural activities in New York City.
