True to its mission, Family Focus Our Place singled out Evanstonians with a commitment to social justice for its Those Who Make a Difference awards: Second Ward Alderman Peter Braithwaite and filmmaker Susan Hope Engel.
Ms. Hope Engel has made several award-winning and notable films such as “Unforgettable,” about the history of the Emerson Street YMCA, as well as documentaries for SHORE, Literature for All of Us, Romano Brothers and Hillside Food Pantry. Her company is Hope Productions.
Ald. Braithwaite focuses his City work on economic development, particularly in providing workforce development opportunities for youth and young adults. His community service work has also been honored by the Rotary Foundation, Evanston Community Foundation and Chessmen Club.
Bernice Weissbourd presented the Weissbourd-Holmes Award to the family of Marquise Weatherspoon, a young mother of four who has overcome many obstacles and whose “top priority is her family.” Dr. Dorothy Williams, director of Family Focus, told the RoundTable Ms. Weatherspoon “represents the strengths that a parent would have to have to have her children be productive citizens.”
