Washington School, at the corner of Main Street and Ashland Avenue, was the site for the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 13. Although the month celebrating Hispanic/Latino culture and contributions officially began on Sept. 15, the celebration joined Streets Alive! this year. The Sept. 15 date was chosen because it is the date of independence for five Latin American nations: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence during this month.
