Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), released the following statement after voting against H.R. 692, legislation that would push the United States closer to an unprecedented default:
“It is outrageous that House Republicans have once again driven this country to the brink of default. Instead of acting responsibly and paying our bills, House Republicans passed a bill that in the event we default, Chinese creditors will get paid while American troops fail to receive their checks, veterans don’t get their benefits on time, federal workers are laid off and Medicare and Medicaid payments stop. Make no mistake, this bill is default under another name. Yet again, reckless Republican infighting is threatening to hold our economy hostage and millions of hard-working families stand to bear the brunt of these horrific consequences. Time is running out and it is time for the governing majority to get serious and do their job. The full faith and credit of the United States is at stake.”
