On Jan. 1, 2016 at approximately 6:30 p.m., an Evanston traffic officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for a minor traffic violation in the area of Ridge Avenue and Church Street, said Commander Perry Polinski of the Evanston Police Department. The vehicle subsequently fled from the officer, collided with a car at the intersection of Davis Street and Sherman Avenue, and came to rest in the front window of the Freshii restaurant at 1569 Sherman Ave., said the Commander.

The vehicle was occupied by three people. The driver, an 18-year old male from Chicago, and a front seat passenger, a 22-year old male from Chicago, were both transported to Evanston North Shore University Hospital with minor injuries. The back seat passenger, a 25 year old female from Chicago, was not injured, said the Commander. Police officers recovered a handgun, he added.

The Felony Review Unit of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved filing charges against the driver for felony fleeing and eluding, driving while under the influence and traffic citations. The front-seat passenger was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possessing a firearm without having an Illinois Owner Identification Card, said the Commander.
