The Democratic Party of Evanston held its 2016 Endorsement Meeting on Sunday. DPOE members cast ballots for their preferred candidates for the March 15 Democratic Primary. In competitive races, the nearly 200-member organization will support Hillary Clinton for President, Tammy Duckworth for U.S. Senate, Kim Foxx for Cook County State’s Attorney, and Josina Morita, Mariyana Spyropoulous, and Tom Greenhaw for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, State Senator Heather Steans, State Representatives Robyn Gabel, Laura Fine, and Kelly Cassidy, and Cook County Recorder of Deeds Karen Yarbrough are all unopposed in the primary and were unanimously endorsed by DPOE.

“Our members are fired up and ready to elect the best Democrats on March 15,” said Evanston Township Committeeman Eamon Kelly. “Our grassroots members are especially excited about local candidates like Kim Foxx who are going to bring real reform to our communities.”

Foxx received overwhelming support from the group with 90 percent of the ballots cast in her favor.

For MWRD, DPOE endorsed Josina Morita and Mariyana Spyropoulos for two of the three six-year terms on the March ballot. Current MWRD Vice President Barbara McGowan also received significant support from the group, but not enough for a formal endorsement. In addition to the three six-year positions, there is one two-year MWRD position up for election this year. In that race, DPOE endorsed Tom Greenhaw.

While DPOE made clear its support in most races, members were torn in the contest for Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. In that race, attorney Jacob Meister had the support of 55 percent of the ballots cast. Chicago Alderman Michelle Harris received 30 percent of the votes. DPOE requires 2/3 support to earn an endorsement.

“We were happy to have both Jacob and Michelle with us. It’s clear that members of our group will be working hard for both candidates in the coming months,” said DPOE President Janira Clark. “It’s going to be an exciting election!”
