Celebration of Latina/o Artists
The Goodman Theatre’s Celebration of Latina/o Artists runs from Jan. 16 through March 13. Since 1997, Henry Godinez, of Evanston and the Goodman Theatre Artistic Associate, has taken the lead in bringing the work of Latina/o writers to the stage. Mr. Godinez said, “To me, it’s every bit, and almost more important to have Latina/o writers, directors and producers. Truth is, I think right now we need more Latina/os in decision-making positions. We need creators of opportunities.”
This year’s festival highlights the works of José Rivera (“Another Word for Beauty”), Isaac Gomes (“La Ruta”), María Irene Fornés (“Sarita”) and Roberto Bolaño (“2666”). “My hope is that audiences will appreciate the breadth of Latina/o work, both when written for the stage, and as literature which is adapted for the stage. Even with just three playwrights, Fornes, Rivera, and Gomez, you have Cuban-American, Puerto Rican and Mexican-American perspectives which also span half a century of Latino playwrighting. Fornes began writing in the 1960s, José in the 1980s and Issac is a young writer just starting out. Bolaño, Marquez and Galeano are three Latin American literary gigantics who are no longer with us, whose work has been adapted to the stage and inspired Latino theatre artists for decades.”
Mr. Godinez will perform in “2666” and will be directing Nilo Cruz’ Pulitzer Prize winning play, “Anna In The Tropics” at Northwestern this May. “This show will have a cast full of Latino students.” He shared his advice for aspiring Latino actors: “Pursue the best education/training you possibly can. Be a sponge and soak in as much as you can by watching and listening. Look for the things that speak to you and spark the need to express yourself. Be proud of your heritage, and the shared history of Latinidad. El Sr. Godínez actuará en 2666 y dirigirá la obra ganadora del Pulitzer de Nilo Cruz, Anna In The Tropics, en Northwestern este mayo. “Esta actuación tendrá un elenco de estudiantes latinos.” El compartió para aspirantes actores latinos, “Consigue la mejor educación y/o entrenamiento que puedas alcanzar.
