Jonathan Leon Altschul died in his home in New Orleans on Feb. 25. He was born in Evanston on May 18, 1981, and was a graduate of Evanston Township High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and went on to complete a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Dr. Altschul was a tenured Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University of New Orleans.

Dr. Altschul was a beloved teacher and scholar, as well as chair of the Loyola University Faculty Senate.

Reverend Kevin Wildes, University president, said, “All who knew Jon remember his gentle laughter and a frequent twinkle in his eye. They also remember the care, thoughtfulness, generosity, intelligence and rigor with which he approached his research, led faculty meetings and taught classes. Jon was well respected by colleagues and students alike.”

Jonathan Altschul was a wonderful son, grandson, brother and uncle and is survived by his parents, Joel and Lynn, grandmother, Esther, brother Jason (Karen), sister Sarah (Robert Jordan), nephews James and Jamal, and nieces Emma and Ellie.

A memorial service celebrating Dr. Altschul’s life will take place at 10:30 a.m. on April 8, at the Kenilworth Club, 410 Kenilworth Ave., Kenilworth.
