The Evanston Fire Department published its 2015 Annual Report last week. The Department maintains a full-time professional staff of 110 members, which includes 107 firefighters across all ranks, and three civilian support members.

In 2015, the Department responded to 9,630 calls for service, the highest total call volume in its history. There were 5,994 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls and 3,636 fire responses. The EMS calls for service were also the highest total in the 140-year history of the Department.

Highlights from 2015 include placing a new aerial-ladder truck in service at Station 3, which replaced a truck that had been in service for 24 years; the installation of video conferencing capabilities at each of the fire stations and fire headquarters; the training of 580 people through the Citizen CPR Program; and the completion of the second annual Citizen Fire Academy.

In 2015, the Department responded to and mitigated a total of 99 fires, resulting in an estimated loss of $2,518,266 in property value. However, as a result of firefighters’ professionalism, offensive firefighting tactics, and response times, the Department was able to save 98% of the property involved in those fires, for a total of $89,851,240 in saved property value, says the report.

“The men and women of the Evanston Fire Department take great pride in how quickly we respond to our community’s homes and businesses,” said Chief Greg Klaiber. “Our average response times for 2015 were once again below the four-minute standard set by the National Fire Protection Association, for both fire and emergency medical calls.”
