U.S. News & World Report released its “Best High Schools” rankings for 2016, placing Evanston Township High School (ETHS) at 13 in Illinois and 452 in the nation. The ranking, which includes selective enrollment high schools, reiterates ETHS’ placement in the top two percent of high schools in the country.
ETHS was awarded a gold medal ranking based on a comprehensive rankings methodology developed by U.S. News & World Report and a global nonprofit social science research firm. A four-step process determined the Best High Schools list, with the first three steps examining how well the schools serve all their students. The fourth step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.
This year marks the first time that graduation rates have been used by U.S. News to rank high schools at the national level. Schools that make it through the first three steps become eligible to be judged nationally in the final step – college-readiness performance using Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmark for readiness. “Seeing our high state and national ranking in recent years is a tribute to our students and staff. We set out a few years ago to create equity and excellence at ETHS, to restructure and change practices that were limiting many of our students in the past,” said ETHS District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon. “We have raised expectations for all students and have built a system of supports to increase the achievement of all students.”
