On April 27, at approximately 9:20 a.m., the school resource officer who is assigned to Evanston Township High School was notified by school officials that they discovered an unloaded Walther P38 semi-automatic handgun in the backpack of one of their students, said Commander Joseph Dugan of the Evanston Police Department. The officer took possession of the handgun and placed the student in custody.

The student, an 18-year old resident of Evanston, was transported to the Evanston Police Department and charged with one count of felony Unlawful Use of a Weapon and misdemeanor Unlawful Use of a Weapon-No Valid Firearm Owners Identification Card, said the Commander.
