On April 27, at approximately 9:20 a.m., the school resource officer who is assigned to Evanston Township High School was notified by school officials that they discovered an unloaded Walther P38 semi-automatic handgun in the backpack of one of their students. The officer took possession of the handgun and placed the student in custody.

The student, an 18-year old resident of Evanston,  was transported to the Evanston Police Department and charged with one count of felony Unlawful Use of a Weapon and misdemeanor Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No Valid Firearm Owners Identification Card.
