On June 17, at approximately 11:17 p.m., Evanston police officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a minor traffic violation in the 700 block of Dodge Avenue, said Commander Joseph Dugan of the Evanston Police Department. When they approached the vehicle, the police officers saw an open container of alcohol inside. The driver of the vehicle, a 42 year old male resident of Rockford and the passenger, a 47 year-old resident of Rockford, were asked to exit the vehicle, but instead the passenger fled. During the foot pursuit in the 800 block of Dodge Avenue, the fleeing man reached into his waistband at which time the officer deployed his taser. The man immediately fell to the ground and attempted to throw a Kel-Tec 9mm handgun under a parked vehicle, said the Commander. The man was taken into custody and transported to the Evanston Police Department. 

The driver of the vehicle was charged with one count of Improper Use of Registration. The passenger  who fled was charged with one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by Felon- a Class 3 Felony, two counts of No Valid Firearm Owners Identification Card weapon/ammunition – Class A Misdemeanors, and one count of Disobedience to Police – City Ordinance Violation, said Commander Duggan.
