The Youth Job Center has launched Summer Institute, a six-week career exploration and placement program for 2016 high school graduates in Chicago and neighboring suburbs. YJC staff will incorporate foundational job-readiness skill training with intensive career exploration to help participants develop a tangible career path plan. Each plan will incorporate the participant’s skills, aptitudes, and interests with the goal of pursuing post-secondary training and/or employment.

The program will include three career panel days, in which local professionals will be invited to speak on and answer questions about their career fields.

The goal of Summer Institute is to have 100% of participants on a career pathway at the end of the six-week program, through either placement or enrollment in college, trade school, career training programs, or entry-level job placement. In addition to ongoing support and mentorship from YJC staff through May 2017, participants will receive a stipend of up to $800 for their participation in Summer Institute. Each participant’s career path plan will also address the immediate need for income by providing access to subsidized internships and direct job placement opportunities.
