Shoppers can hit the sidewalks of downtown Evanston and Main-Dempster Mile, as independent retailers and national chains will be ready to offer deals on the sidewalks of both districts. Apparel, shoes, one-of-a-kind accessories, home goods, and decorative arts will be offered to tempt customers this weekend, July 29-31.

Local artists have been invited to be a part of the action in downtown Evanston. Participating artists will be set up on Sherman Avenue between Church and Davis streets on Saturday and Sunday, displaying paintings, jewelry, accessories, clothing and more for the public to peruse, enjoy and purchase.

In addition, Downtown Evanston is providing fun, free entertainment throughout the weekend: Ping-Pong at the plaza outside of American Apparel on Friday or Saturday; big games (Jenga, Chess and Scrabble) at Fountain Square; and a chalk party and Envelope Exchange.

At 2 p.m. on July 31, LYFE Kitchen will host storyteller Lisa Dennison who combines a blend of original music with on-the-spot storytelling, and Close Knit, 1630 Orrington Ave., is hosting a free pom-pom making workshop. Later that day there will be a Harry Potter celebration on Saturday, featuring a costume contest, readings and release party at Bookends & Beginnings and Barnes & Noble.

On July 30, the Main-Dempster Mile will host events at the parking lot just north of Chicago/Dempster. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on July 30, pedi-cabs will take shoppers from downtown Evanston to Main Street and Dempster Street, making one stop in each shopping district.  

 Pick up and drop off locations are listed below; pedi-cabs operate on a first-come, first-served basis and do not have specific pick-up or drop-off times.

• Intersection of Church Street and Maple Avenue near American Apparel

• Alley between Metra Station and CTA Station on Main Street

• Parking lot just north of Dempster Street between Bagel Art and School of Rock

Shoppers can also take part in the “Here” Photo Contest by looking for  these  posters in stores, restaurants, salons, fitness studios and more to taking a  photo of the poster. Bonus points awarded to photos that feature an activity, product, food, or service the photographer purchased.
