On Oct. 17, at approximately 10:45 a.m., a patrol officer observed a man, a 20-year old resident of Evanston, walking on the sidewalk in the 900 block of Greenleaf Street, with a green backpack that appeared to have an object inside which was stretching the bag’s material, said Commander Joe Dugan of the Evanston Police Department. The officer knew man from previous contacts. When the man saw the officer, he immediately stopped and started to walk in the opposite direction. The officer drove towards the man, but he began to increase his pace away from the officer, said the Commander.
The officer stopped the man, and observed him to be nervous and shaking, said the Commander. When the officer asked about the backpack, the man denied ownership, said the Commander. The officer conducted a search of the backpack and found a loaded 12 gauge shotgun, said the Commander. The man was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful Use of Weapon and related offenses.
