On Oct. 17, at 4:30 p.m. the Evanston Fire Department was dispatched for a windsurfer in distress a mile off Lee St. beach. Fortunately, the windsurfer had a cell phone and was able to contact his friend telling him he was in distress and to call 911. The Evanston Fire Department responded with a full Water Rescue Response including the Personal Watercraft Team and divers on standby. This operation utilized two separate command posts along with the help of several agencies including; the U.S. Coast Guard, Chicago Fire Department and NBC 5 Helicopter. At 5:35 p.m the windsurfer was rescued and brought to safety, said Division Chief Paul Polep of the Evanston Fire Department.
